Presentation

The humanities are at the heart of Universidad Católica San Pablo’s academic program because they offer something essential to a university education: they allow students to broaden their vision and deepen their understanding of reality, to ponder the ultimate purpose of their own existence, and to understand the transcendent value of human actions. The disciplines that make up the humanities are aimed at explaining the mystery of man and his fundamental and significant role in the world and in history.

Through the study of philosophy, theology, art, literature and other disciplines, the humanities bring us closer to a deeper knowledge of the person and culture, and expand the mind of those who study them so they are able to find, in every dimension of their daily lives, the answer to the fundamental questions that give meaning to our existence: What is truth? What is man? Who am I and what is the meaning of my existence? Answering these questions brings with it a deeper and more complete understanding of one’s own existence, favoring a fuller life, both personally and professionally.

Vision

Vision

In an increasingly fragmented world, the humanities are more necessary than ever. They help us to rediscover the great goals, the first and last reasons for our existence, collaborate with the integration of diverse knowledge, and cultivate a transcendent vision that illuminates both academic life and professional practice. At this University we cultivate the humanities from an anthropological and theological perspective illuminated by the Catholic faith. It is the Incarnated Word who illuminates human life in all its extension.

The transversal approach of our Department of Humanities guarantees that the humanistic contents are integrated into all the departments of the University, enriching the students in all the academic areas. This not only benefits students by providing them with an integral formation, but also strengthens the identity of the university as a space for the search for truth and the common good. This transversality allows students to develop a critical, ethical and creative vision, indispensable qualities for the challenges of the contemporary world.

Lines of formation

The Department of Humanities organizes its academic work in six lines of formation, each with a specific purpose within the integral program:

  1. Propedeutic: Introduces students to the university ideal and cultivates their ability to understand and communicate reality through the mastery of language, logic and expression.
  2. Philosophy: Addresses the fundamental principles of reality and knowledge, providing an integrative vision of all the disciplines.
  3. Theology: Offers the fundamentals of Christian revelation, helping students to understand the relationship between God, the person and the world.
  4. History: Deepens understanding of the human being as a historical and social being, strengthening the understanding of cultural identity and its context.
  5. Arts: Cultivates aesthetic sensitivity and appreciation for beauty as an expression of the mystery of reality.
  6. Personal Development: Promotes the integration of moral and intellectual virtues, developing adults with integrity who are committed to their vocation.

These lines work together to guarantee an integral education that enriches both academic development and the personal life of the students, preparing them to contribute significantly to society.
